Description:

Overview:

The D. E. Shaw group seeks motivated individuals with impressive records of academic and/or professional achievement to join our Systems team as systems administrators. Systems administrators provide support, automation, and management for a wide variety of enterprise technology, including a sophisticated Windows and Linux desktop/server environment, cutting-edge storage and clustered computing solutions, and a number of communications platforms.

What you’ll do day-to-day:

Systems administrators are responsible for a variety of support and project work across a wide range of technology, including but not limited to Windows PCs and servers, UNIX servers, mobile devices, and an advanced communications infrastructure. Support and project work may include troubleshooting complex technical issues, administration of various infrastructure-level systems, and implementing automation and efficiency improvements. Successful team members are resourceful, with a keen ability to combine independent research, prior experience, and critical analysis to resolve unfamiliar problems and advance challenging work.

Who we’re looking for:

• Candidates will have an interest in both building technology and helping others use it effectively. They’ll successfully combine impressive research and analytical skills to resolve unfamiliar problems and advance challenging work.

• Applicants should have knowledge of the Microsoft Windows enterprise environment and standard applications, such as Microsoft Office, and a demonstrated interest in improving processes and technology. They should be familiar with general systems administration, including hardware and software administration and phone, desk-side, trade floor, and/or remote user support. Applicants should also have familiarity with a Linux environment and experience with Python, PowerShell, and/or other scripting languages.

• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills are critical, as the role involves working with global colleagues across a diverse set of backgrounds, experiences, and projects.

• In keeping with our firm’s culture and the ever-changing nature of our work, we’re more interested in talent, curiosity, and motivation as demonstrated by an impressive history of achievement than we are in any particular skill or experience.

About D. E Shaw & Co.:

Headquartered in New York City, the D. E. Shaw group is a global investment and technology development firm, founded in 1988, with offices around the world. As one of the world’s largest hedge fund managers, our firm has earned an international reputation for successful investing based on innovation, careful risk management, and the quality and depth of our research and staff. With a culture that combines some of the best aspects of academia, finance, and technology, we pride ourselves on a work environment that promotes collaboration, integrity, and adherence to the highest possible ethical standards. We’ve learned that when an extraordinary team sets extraordinarily ambitious goals, unexpected breakthroughs can be achieved. Our people are intellectual but also humble, rigorous in their work but flexible in their approach, interesting, friendly, and most of all, curious about the world around us. Our teams work in close collaboration—not in competitive silos—to share trade ideas, manage risks, streamline processes, and explore new opportunities. We think this creates a number of research and portfolio management advantages and fosters a stimulating and rewarding work environment. By helping each person to develop professionally and to learn not only from successes but also from mistakes, we help spark the intellectual interests of individual employees and ensure that they are thriving. Outside of the office, our people have wide-ranging personal interests that they pursue as entrepreneurs, patent holders, competitive sailors, marathoners, professional opera singers, board members of nonprofit organizations, and champion bridge players, to name a few. We are committed to the well-being and happiness of our employees, and we recognize that different people thrive in different types of environments: some are most productive working in t-shirts or listening to music, while others need time away from the office to recharge after a challenging project. We also have pantries stocked with snacks and games, an on-site gym, guest speakers from a range of disciplines, volunteer and public service opportunities, museum memberships, and social events.
